Found Footage Horror

One of the Earliest Horror Movies To Use This Style - Click The Image For More Information

These type of films use a mix of cinema verite techniques and classic horror elements.  Filmmakers often use this style of filming in order to create more intimacy between the viewer and the characters.  Often the film is shot from the point-of-view of one or more of the characters involved.  In recent years, the style has primarily been used for horror and science fiction movies.  In this post, we showcase our favorite movies from this sub genre.

Cannibal Holocaust (1980)

Documentary filmmakers go into the heart of the Amazon rain forest in order to study the ancient tribes that call the forest home.  They never return.  A college professor from New York City travels there to find the lost footage and to investigate what happened.  A shocking film!

crimes.  The viewer gets to watch as the killer, who is named Ben, becomes increasingly violent with each episode.

The Last Broadcast (1998)

I remember in the late 1990s when many horror fans were suggesting that Blair Witch ripped off this movie.  I don’t know about that.  But The Last Broadcast is definitely worth seeing at least once.  It is about a couple of public access television hosts who go deep into the New Jersey woods in order to search for the Jersey Devil.  Unfortunately, they never return.  So documentary filmmaker David Leigh sets about to find out what really occurred.

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

Definitely the most famous of this genre.  Four students go out into the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland in order to investigate the folklore surrounding the infamous Blair Witch.  While in the woods, something begins stalking them.  Of course, only the film footage shot by the students themselves was recovered.  That footage is the actual movie.

REC (2007)

A Great Spanish Horror Movie - Better Than the Remake - Click The Image For More Details

This film was later remade in Hollywood and released as Quarantine (2008).  Both are excellent movies, but I’d recommend watching the original Spanish version.  A female television reporter and her cameraman are embedded with a group of city firemen.  When the firemen respond to a situation at an apartment complex, they find a scene of chaos.  An old woman bites a police officer and then, inexplicably, the whole building is quarantined by the government.  As it turns out, something is infecting the residents of the apartment building.

Diary of the Dead (2007)

Definitely not the best Romero film but it should satisfy zombie fans.  A group of film students travel across Pennsylvania in an RV during the zombie apocalypse, trying to survive each attack along the way.  They take refuge at an Amish farm and later find a group of survivors from the National Guard.

Paranormal Activity (2007)

there is a ghostly presence that has been attached to her since childhood and has followed her to the new home.  Micah is a skeptic and a video enthusiast. He gets Katie’s permission to set up several cameras all throughout the home.  At first, they capture only minor supernatural events.  After Micah brings home a Ouija board, things begin to get much more interesting.

Cloverfield (2008)

Six young New Yorkers attempt to survive a monster attack on New York City.  The movie is pretty good, but definitely didn’t live up to the hype surrounding its release.  Still worth a look though if you’re a horror fan who hasn’t seen it yet.  The shaky camera was so bad that many people in the theatres became sick from watching it.  So watch out!

With the help of some feathers, bits of bone, a chainsaw and a budget that nowadays wouldn’t even pay for a new kitchen, the unforgettably oppressive atmosphere for the house was created. From the moment Leatherface (cinema's most fucked-up mother figure ever) takes to the screen, this film doesn’t let up its relentless pace which quite literally makes the viewer feel as breathless and truamatised as Marilyn Burns at the end as she finally escapes. The film was originally entitled, ‘Brain Cheese’ which really sums it up. MORE THE WICKER MAN (1974)Next to the telephone, vacuum cleaner, television, antiseptic, anaesthetics and the thermos flask, Scotland’s greatest export ever. Gloriously creepy, funny, classic horror/musical. The sort of thing Dennis Potter might have produced if he’d been brought up on a hippy commune. Edward Woodward is perfectly cast as the sexually repressed police officer, visiting pagan paradise – Summerisle, to investigate a missing child, Rowan. Christopher Lee subverts his horror image beautifully; Britt Eckland’s wall dancing tease is heaven on earth and Walter Carr, sadly missed, looks worryingly at home. Add to this one of the most bizarrely wonderful soundtracks ever. Glorious. MORE HALLOWEEN (1981)The theme tune to this film still makes me hurl with fear. Can’t listen to it without coming up in hives and weeping fearfully. Despite being one of the most damaging films as far as understanding mental illness goes, ever, this is classic horror that forever more I can’t think of certain scenes. Michael Myers behind the washing etc/appearing momentarily at the side of a hedge etc. Jamie Lee Curtis is unusually likeable (for a slasher movie) in the central role, and it is the audience’s empathy with her character that make her pursuit by Myers in the final scenes so gripping. Donald Pleasance offers scant comfort with truly awful acting – ‘He is gone from this place.’ Another low-budget ($300,000) gem. MORE HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER (1990)Saw this as the first film in a double bill with ‘Peeping Tom’ at the suitably creepy Scala cinema in London. Fled in terror into King’s Cross before the second film started. This grisly, unapologetic, dead-eyed horror film, based on the life and crimes of American serial killer, Henry Lee Lucas, really plumbs the depths of unpleasantness. It opens with images of Henry’s previous victims, killed in a variety of ways to escape detection. When backward, incestuous cousin Otis starts joining Henry of killing sprees, things just go from bad to worse. The scenes where the men kill two prostitutes, and torture and kill a family are particularly nauseating. Still can’t see Michael Rooker (Henry) in films without feeling decidedly uneasy. MORE THE FLY (1986)Though I’m not a great fan of science fiction, I absolutely adore this extremely gory remake. Jeff Goldblum is perfect as the goofy scientific genius slowly metamorphasising into an insect after an experiment teleporting chimps goes terribly wrong. Think one of the films particular strengths is that right up to the final transformation, the viewer feels complete sympathy with ‘ the monster’ – ‘If you stay, I’ll hurt you.’ Also a fascinating insight into insect psychology, a beautiful allegory for the dreadful process of a slow death and an early insight into the gloriously twisted mind of director, David Cronenberg. MORE IRREVERSIBLE (2002)Horrible but brilliant film which has the viewer reeling from the opening scene. The murder scene at the start is perhaps the single most disturbing and sickening image I have ever encountered; the uncensoredness of the rape make it deliberately harrowing for the viewer; the swirling camerawork and hellish depths of the S&M club made me feel cold and repulsed. Perhaps the film’s greatest power though is in the horror being through human action and emotion. Told over the course of a day in the life of couple, Markus and Alex, the harrowing odyssey begins with the brutal killing then goes into reverse to reveal the horrifying events that lead to the hellishly brutal climax of the opening scene. Only for those with a strong stomach. MORE JACOB'S LADDER (1990)Thought I was going to have a heart attack the first time I watched this. Another stunningly paranoid monster of a film, following the life/death of Vietnam vet/postman, Jacob Singer (Tim Robbins) and the concept of primal fear and post-traumatic stress disorder. This is the stuff that nightmares are made off – from the unexplained sightings of strange demons with grotesque twitching movements and facial distortions; Charles Manson turning up at a party; the terrifying and surreal imagery; dreams that Jacob’s dead son is still alive being suddenly thwarted by real life, this horrifying and strangely spiritual film doesn’t let up. MORE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (1999)I can’t think of a film that has so completely divided audiences into the love/hate camps more than this. Have had several arguments with people who absolutely loathed it. Perhaps people are just too used to horrific and expensive special effects and are too lazy to use their imaginations. Love the simple props (never has a pile of twigs looked so menacing,) the way the animosity between the 3 characters adds to the growing sense of terror and the way the film slowly gets under your skin and refuses to shift. Was also fascinating seeing the effect discussion on the internet prior to the film’s release had on both its box office takings and audience reaction.MORE MANHUNTER (1986)100 time scarier prequel to ‘Silence of the Lambs’ with the excellent Brian Cox portraying a quieter and infinitely more menacing Hannibal Lector (although it is detective, Will Graham, rather than Lector who is the focus of this film.) The towering killer ‘The Tooth Fairy’ is truly malignant; the use of verbal description rather than actual images forces the viewer to conjure up even more horrific images and the character of the blind female also gives director Michael Mann the opportunity to give the unpleasantness a truly sensual edge. MORE THE TENANT (1976)Criminally overlooked Polanski film in which he plays the lead – a man who moves into a new flat where the previous tenant – Simone – has committed suicide by jumping from the window. After meeting the dead girl’s friend (Isabelle Adjani) and learning more about her, he begins to slowly being taken over by the spirit of the dead girl – wearing her clothes, smoking her cigarettes, drinking the same drink as her and obsessing over one of her teeth which he finds stuffed in a hole in the wall. The oddball neighbours are unsympathetic and more concerned with the noise of furniture being moved about the flat in the middle of the night. A stunning portrait of total paranoia which knocks spots off ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and ‘Repulsion.’
